A cruise day in St. Kitts
Your ship docks in the middle of Basseterre, so a lot is within reach in a few hours. Here is where you land, how to get around, and how to fit in a beach or even a hop to Nevis before all-aboard.
Where you dock
Cruise ships berth at Port Zante in Basseterre, right in the capital. The pier has shops and duty-free, taxis line up at the gate, and downtown Basseterre with Independence Square is a short walk away. See the cruise schedule to check which ships are in on your date.
Getting around from the port
Taxis wait right at Port Zante and offer set island tours by the hour or the day; agree the fare before you leave, as rates are by zone rather than metered. If you would rather drive yourself, you can rent a car for the day. Many of the best-known sights are a short drive from the pier.
What to see near the pier
Walkable from the port: downtown Basseterre, Independence Square and the National Museum in the old Treasury Building. A little further out are Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the St. Kitts scenic railway, and the beaches of Frigate Bay and the south-east peninsula.
A day trip to Nevis
Nevis is close enough to visit, but only with a careful eye on the time. The passenger ferry is about 30 minutes each way, and a scheduled sailing can be tight around a cruise window. Timing tips
- Note your all-aboard time and work backwards, leaving a wide margin.
- For anything far from the pier, use a taxi tour or a booked transfer rather than a scheduled bus.
- Weather and sea conditions can delay ferries, so build in slack if you cross to Nevis.
- Carry small EC dollar bills for taxis and stalls.
