A day trip to Nevis from St. Kitts
Nevis is 30 minutes and about EC$40 away, which makes it the easiest good day out in the Federation. Here is a plan you can actually follow: which boat to take, what it costs, what to do when you land, and how to be sure you get back.
The plan, in one paragraph
Walk onto a morning ferry at Basseterre, cross to Charlestown in about half an hour, spend the day on the island by taxi or on a tour, and take an afternoon or early evening boat back. You do not need a car, you do not need to book the ferry in advance, and you do need to know what time the last one leaves.
Getting there
The passenger ferry
Basseterre to Charlestown, roughly 30 minutes. Adult fares run EC$35 to EC$40 depending on which boat is running, plus EC$1 pier tax. Tickets are bought at the terminal before boarding, so arrive 30 minutes early. Check today's departures and see which vessel runs which crossing.
A private water taxi
The whole boat, leaving when you want, from beaches and resort jetties as well as the terminals. Worth it for a group, an early start, or a return after the ferries stop. See charter options and prices.
What to do once you land
Charlestown is small and walkable, and most of what people come for is a short drive out of it: the Botanical Gardens of Nevis, Golden Rock Inn, Montpelier Plantation, the hot springs, Cottle Church, and Pinney's Beach for the afternoon.
You have two sensible options. Take a taxi from the pier and agree the fare before you set off, which suits a short list of stops. Or book a guided Nevis tour, which covers the circuit without you navigating, and is usually arranged ahead rather than on the day.
Getting back, which is the part people get wrong
The last sailing is earlier than most visitors assume and it is not the same every day. Decide your return boat before you leave St. Kitts, then treat the one before it as your actual target. Missing it turns a EC$40 crossing into a charter.
If you do get stuck, a private water taxi will cross outside ferry hours by arrangement. It is the safety net, not the plan.
What it costs, roughly
Return ferry for one adult is about EC$72 to EC$82 including pier tax. Work out the exact number for your party and your boat with the fare calculator. Add whatever you spend on the ground, which is where a tour price or an agreed taxi fare keeps the day predictable.
