Driving in St. Kitts & Nevis

You need a visitor's temporary driving licence

Every visitor who drives in the Federation needs a St. Kitts & Nevis Visitor's Temporary Driver's Licence, carried alongside your own licence from home. Apply online before you travel at eservices.police.kn, or ask the rental counter to arrange it when you collect the car.

Keep left

Traffic drives on the left. Most rental cars here are left-hand drive, so you will sit where you are used to sitting and drive where you are not. Roundabouts turn clockwise, and give way to the right.

Getting between the islands

Rentals are collected and returned on the same island. If you are crossing over for the day, leave the car and take the boat: check the live ferry schedule for Basseterre to Charlestown sailings, or the flight schedule if you are flying in or out.

What to bring to the counter

  • Your own valid driver's licence, held at least two years
  • The visitor's temporary licence, or time to arrange one at the counter
  • A credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit
  • Your booking reference from SKN Transit

Car rental questions

Do I need a local driving licence to rent a car in St. Kitts and Nevis?

Yes. Visitors need a St. Kitts & Nevis Visitor's Temporary Driver's Licence to drive here, in addition to your own valid licence from home. You can apply online before you travel at eservices.police.kn, or the rental counter can arrange it when you collect the vehicle.

Which side of the road do you drive on in St. Kitts and Nevis?

The left. Most rental cars are left-hand drive, so you sit on the same side you would at home in North America but drive on the opposite side of the road. Take the first few junctions slowly, and remember roundabouts run clockwise.

How much does it cost to rent a car in St. Kitts?

Daily rates currently start at EC$122 a day (about US$45), before optional extras. Collecting at the airport adds a one-time Airport Access Fee of US$10.00, and St. Kitts rentals include an Island Enhancement Fee of US$1.50 per rental day. Every fee is shown before you book, never at the counter.

Can I collect a car at the airport?

Yes. Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) has a counter, open Monday to Saturday 12:00pm to 6:00pm and Sunday 12:00pm to 4:00pm. Bookings collected at the airport carry a one-time Airport Access Fee.

Can I rent on Nevis as well as St. Kitts?

Yes. There is a branch on each island, so you can collect in Basseterre, at the airport in St. Kitts, or at Pinney's Industrial Estate on Nevis. Not every vehicle is kept on both islands, so the booking screen shows you which cars are available on the island you choose.

Do I pay SKN Transit or the rental company?

The rental company. SKN Transit sends your booking request and shows you the full price up front; Thrifty Car Rental confirms your reservation and takes payment directly.

How far in advance should I book?

Book at least 24 hours before collection. Availability is confirmed by the rental company, and in high season, around cruise calls and public holidays, the smaller economy cars go first.

Is there a minimum age or a deposit?

The minimum age is 25 with a valid licence held for at least two years. Deposit, insurance excess and fuel policy are set by the rental company and confirmed with your reservation.
